| Naomi Smith achieved accreditation
as a Criminal Law Specialist from the Law Institute of Victoria.
Since 2004 Naomi has practiced exclusively in criminal law,
both for the defence and the prosecution.
Naomi defended both indictable and summary matters in the
Criminal Law Division at Victoria Legal Aid (VLA). As acting
Managing Lawyer Naomi managed one of the Criminal Law Division
teams while working as a solicitor advocate appearing in all
stages of the criminal process in all jurisdictions of the
Victorian Courts. This included regularly appearing in contested
bail applications, committal matters and in pleas. Naomi had
conduct of some of the most complex indictable files including
murder trials and matters involving the application of the
Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act.
As a solicitor at the Victorian Office of Public Prosecutions
Naomi practised in all areas of indictable crime, from Magistrates'
Court to Court of Appeal matters as well as broader criminal
matters such as serious WorkCover prosecutions and Coronial
Inquests. Naomi appeared in contested bail applications, case
conferences, directions hearings, filing hearings and committal
mentions.
Prior to 2004 Naomi worked as an articled clerk then Legal
Counsel at the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) where she
managed a portfolio of common law and Victorian Civil and
Administrative Tribunal files for both the TAC and Victorian
WorkCover Authority. In this role, Naomi appeared for clients
at settlement conferences, mediations and at VCAT as well
as managing jury trials.
Naomi signed the bar roll in November 2008 and is interested
in all areas of criminal practice, personal injury law and
occupational health and safety matters.
